We all are acquainted with the age-old aphorism " BEGGARS CANNOT BE CHOOSERS " and it is very true that when one begs one should accept whatever the benefactor provides to him/her and be thankful for the same. However, in these crazy and messy times, the aforementioned aphorism has been shattered….The other day, whilst passing through the Chandravinayak Temple at Chabahil, I saw a few beggars sitting outside the premises of the temple. It was an evening time and the heavens had darkened, a devotee after paying reverence to Lord Ganesh and out of humbleness; he went towards the beggars and offered them hot tea and snacks at a nearby decent restaurant. So he asked them to follow him towards that place, however to his amazement; the beggars wouldn't listen him rather demanded either he provide the foodstuff from an eatery selling poor quality foodstuff which was right in front of them or bring it from wherever he wanted to…He explained them they would get fresh and healthy foodstuff where he wanted to feed them; however, they were just adamant and would not budged at all. Insisting they would rather sit and would not want his alms. Seeing his impatience, I thought that person would change his mind and would walk off realizing the unsavory behaviors of the beggars. But to my surprise, that person not only relented to the beggars' demand but also provided them with some money. His response manifests a true devout guided by divine intention of serving the lesser privileged beings as such. Strange are the behaviours of some beggars nowadays that while walking on the streets if you provide them a coin of 1 or 2 rupee, they will not accept it and rather demand for more…..It seems the harshness of poverty and paucity of necessities have eroded and blighted the sensibility and humanistic feelings of gratefulness whereby out of sheer frustration, the beggars act in such awkward manners.
